Overview

The Wickiup is a moderately rugged 4x4 trail within the San Rafael Swell, only 30 miles west of Green River. The path courses through desert junipers, pinyon pine and shrubs of blackbush, rabbitbush and several colonies of rare cacti. Bobbing and weaving over slopes of colorful sandstone, you’ll wrap alongside the spectacle of a rock formation known as The Wickiup. Eventually the trail breaks out above the washes and opens to vast open plains. The north end of The Wickiup connects with Oil Well Flat. The name "Wickiup' derives from the similarly shaped dwellings of early American Indians, not to be confused with the tipi, which is different in how it’s constructed, as well as use. The mountain is primarily made up of Sinbad Limestone, dating back to the Triassic era, approximately 200 million years ago. There is a quick but steep hiking trail to the top of the peak.
