At over one hundred miles in length, this trail covers just about everything. The toughest parts are steep, with mild washouts in the mountains. Be aware of your vehicle's fuel range. Fuel is available in La Paz and Cuidad Constitucion, so prepare accordingly. Watch for livestock on the road and villagers on horseback.
There is camping available along the trail and on the Gulf of California coast. There are even tiny villages along the way, with several offering modest accommodations.
This section of the Baja Divide Trail runs between Todos Santos and San Jose del Cabo. The most challenging part of this trail is the steep, narrow shelf road in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. The trail has several potential water crossings here, depending on the time of year and weather. If you have no fear of heights, stop to take in the breathtaking views of the lush, rolling mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Camping along this trail is a challenge, but it can be found. Ranches and small villages dot this trail. Make sure you are not camping on private land without permission. Watch for cattle, goats, and other ranch animals occupying the trail.
This shoreline trail takes you through one of Baja California Sur's most beautiful National Marine Parks, where whales and stingrays are frequently seen jumping out of the water. It is heavily washboarded and sandy in places, winding through beaches, arroyos, and bluffs. A mix of dispersed free camping on the beaches and fee camping on private land is available along the trail. Be aware of DEEP sand and livestock and proceed according to your vehicle's capability, as this is the most challenging part of the trail.
This graded, washboard trail ends at a beautiful beach on the Sea of Cortez. The road itself is suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles. But as you get to the beach, the sand gets deep quickly! This is the most difficult part of this trail. Camping is allowed on the beach and at some pull-offs before the deep sand.
