Mahogany Hill is a straight-through connecting road that begins at an informational board and runs east for 14 miles through shaded timber. Partway along it, it squeezes between two lava rock hills, and the drive takes about two and a half hours. The road briefly crosses private land in a couple of places and ends near more private property, so drivers should stay on the established route.
The surface is rutted dirt with loose rock and the occasional sandy wash, and most of it is easier than the overall rating suggests. Embedded rocks in the road surface at one point will require a slow approach. Additionally, drivers will encounter a set of unavoidable ruts about 11 inches deep, where careful tire placement matters. A short, narrow shelf road is only one vehicle wide, so take it slowly and watch for oncoming traffic.
Camping is dispersed, with four spots along the route and mostly tree cover. The first spot, near the start, fits at least three rigs and has shade but little privacy. Spots farther east are smaller, and one barely fits a single rig. At least one spot has both shade and some privacy. A 16-day stay limit is posted on the informational board at the start.
