Tucked into the far northern reaches of Carson National Forest near the Colorado line, Forest Road 494 is a short connector road that drops through a remote mix of aspen, conifer, and open mountainside, becoming increasingly narrow and rocky as it descends, with deep ruts, mud holes, shelf-road sections, and tight vegetation demanding careful line choice, especially for larger expedition rigs. The road surface is very rocky, with rocks up to the size of grapefruit. Expect multiple large mud holes, soft ground, and large, deep ruts on the steeper sections. Low branches and shrubbery extend onto the trail in places, so wide or tall rigs should expect brush contact. Pullouts are limited along the shelf road section, making it a real concern to meet oncoming traffic given how narrow the track becomes.

In fall, the changing aspens add a burst of color to an otherwise rugged landscape, while a secluded campsite along the route (36.98882, -106.21615) offers a quiet place to settle in away from the more traveled forest roads.

Part of what makes 494 memorable is its passage across the historic railroad corridor that winds through this corner of northern New Mexico, a landscape shaped by generations of logging, grazing, rail travel, and backcountry access. Today, the road feels more like an old mountain route than a maintained thoroughfare, rewarding slow travel and good judgment rather than speed. When dry, it is an engaging link through the forest; after significant rain, its soft ground and deep mud can transform the same route into an entirely different challenge.
