NS246 follows a broad, open Monumental Pass through the Sacramento Mountains, offering expansive views east across the Mojave Valley. Several hiking routes and side roads branch off along the way, many of them leading to abandoned mining sites that add extra opportunities for exploration.
A few existing dispersed campsites are visible from the route, and most of the trail crosses BLM land where dispersed camping is allowed. In addition to the established sites, there are several flat pullouts and open areas along the road that can work well for camping.
The road surface is generally flat and gravelly for the entire route, making it suitable for most high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions. Side roads and connecting trails may be rougher and are better suited to a 4x4 with some clearance.
