Hero: Elk Trail
small-sr Icon

This out-and-back trail passes through a beautiful desert plateau full of Joshua Trees and California Junipers, eventually reaching the fenced border of Joshua Tree National Park. Elk Trail provides access to other driving trails, including Little Morongo Canyon Road, as well as sites for day camps to enjoy the several hiking paths in the north-west corner of Joshua Tree National Park. As the trail advances east, the Joshua Trees' thin and burn scars increase from several fires over the years, with the most recent being the Elk Fire in 2022.

No overnight camping is permitted on this Mojave Desert Land Trust property. However, dispersed camping can be found on BLM property along Little Morongo Canyon Road, or improved camping at the nearby Black Rock Campground within the Joshua Tree National Park.

Elk Trail is an easy trail, flat and wide, and comfortably managed by a two-wheel drive passenger SUV.
