Near the north end of the Black Lava Butte and within the Sand to Sea National Monument, SS1418, also labeled as RC1418, moves over a flat sandy desert spotted with Joshua Trees while intersecting several other driving and hiking trails that explore this area. At the trail's western end, it merges with Roadrunner Rut.
The flat terrain of the trail makes for abundant suitable dispersed camping with sites large enough for a few vehicles, but without shade. The best camp spots are next to the boulder formations that dot the trail and provide wind shelter.
SS1418 is an easy trail with no obstacles other than an occasional smooth boulder embedded in the sand. It can easily be handled by any high clearance.
