The Oatman Massacre site, located on a volcanic bluff overlooking the Gila River, marks the spot where the Oatman family was attacked on February 18, 1851, while traveling the Gila Trail. Six family members were killed; 15-year-old Lorenzo survived after being left for dead, while sisters Olive (14) and Mary Ann (7) were taken captive. The surrounding landscape near the site retains traces of the old wagon trail and later Butterfield Stage route, and if you look closely, you can see marks in the stone from wagon wheels.
Today, the site is reached via a mostly easy dirt trail that requires high-clearance vehicles, and there is a campsite at the end if you dare to stay the night.
