Exploring Utah’s San Rafael Swell: A Weekend of Off-Road Adventure

It was Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer, and spring was finally revealing its vibrant colors. This meant only one thing: it was time for our first camping adventure of the season! Our trusty Jeep was packed and ready to hit the road. With the trails mapped out from Trails Offroad™, we were eager to explore the wonders of the San Rafael Swell.

Located in south-central Utah, the San Rafael Swell is a nearly 900 square mile area filled with dramatic sandstone formations, deep slot canyons, and wide-open desert. The area is managed primarily by the Bureau of Land Management, allowing plenty of dispersed camping and exploration. Known for its breathtaking geology and ancient history, “The Swell” is a dream destination for anyone looking for wide-open spaces and solitude.

The region is divided by Interstate 70: the southern portion is home to easier, scenic routes, while the northern side challenges drivers with legendary trails. And this weekend, we got to experience only a small batch of the many trails mapped out in the area. Here’s a quick overview of our weekend in the Swell!

Buckhorn Draw Road & Cane Wash: Tracing History Through the Desert

Upon arrival and after setting up our camp beneath the early morning sky, we wasted no time diving into exploration. Our first stop was Buckhorn Draw Road, a classic gateway trail into the heart of the Swell. This wide, graded gravel road is accessible for most vehicles and lined with plenty of dispersed campsites, scenic overlooks, and fascinating historical stops. The road itself is smooth, but it can get washboarded, so airing down your tires was a must.

Here, we marveled at the ancient petroglyphs and pictographs left by Native Americans centuries ago. Standing before these drawings felt surreal, creating a tangible link to a distant past. We spent time discussing the stories behind each symbol, picturing the lives of those who once roamed these lands.

To keep the history theme going and avoid the holiday traffic on the main roads, we headed toward Cane Wash, a scenic connector trail linking Buckhorn Draw Road to Fix-It Pass. Cane Wash is mostly soft sand with a few rocky sections, perfect for anyone looking for an easygoing but engaging off-road drive. The trail winds through a sandy wash lined with desert brush and the remnants of Utah’s mining history. Old equipment and weathered mine shafts hint at the days when prospectors roamed these hills in search of fortune. The exploration was both educational and adventurous, pulling our curiosity into the depths of an intriguing past.

The Wickiup and Round Knoll: Moderate Trails with Big Payoffs

After a morning exploring the easier routes of Buckhorn Draw and Cane Wash, we were ready to step things up a bit. We decided to find 2 moderately-rated trails, The Wickiup and Round Knoll. They provided us with a great mix of challenge and stunning vistas that left us in awe of nature’s artistry.

The Wickiup trail loops around its red cone peak through pinyon pine, juniper, and stretches of open desert. The trail features a blend of packed sand, soft washes, and a few rocky sections. There’s a short ledge climb that is manageable for most high-clearance 4x4s. And at the top there are wide-open views of sandstone cliffs and colorful desert ridges that seem to go on forever. I would also recommend watching out for high speed dirt bikes and ATVs in the trees.

After that we checked out Round Knoll. This 7-mile trail features a few steep, rocky hills and loose terrain. The route winds through dense juniper and desert brush with sharp turns and dry wash crossings that keep you on your toes.

Both trails are great for those wanting to move beyond beginner routes without pushing limits.

Cooling Off in the San Rafael River

After a dusty day on the trails, we found respite in the warm waters of the San Rafael River. The cool water felt refreshing against our sun-kissed skin, and we splashed about, letting the worries of life wash away. The incredible sight of wild donkeys rolling around in the dirt added an unexpected sense of joy and a touch of wild spirit to our afternoon.

As we soaked in the beauty surrounding us, the gorgeous views unfolded like a vibrant canvas. Massive cliffs towered above, their colors illuminated by the spring sun, while blooming Cottonwood trees danced gently in the breeze. Our leisurely pace allowed us to absorb it all, and in those moments, we felt incredibly grateful for the chance to be surrounded by nature.

Every path we took offered something unique, whether it was a sweeping vista, secret nooks, or delightful encounters with wildlife. Our Jeep conquered every rocky terrain and sandy patch, enhancing our journey and amplifying our shared excitement.

Having detailed trail information made it easy to plan our days around the kind of terrain and challenge we wanted, whether that meant a relaxed scenic drive or a moderate climb. Even though we’d visited a few of these trails before, we were on the lookout for new routes to explore. Wrapping Up the Adventure

As night fell, the sky transformed into a magnificent tapestry of stars, more brilliant than we could have imagined. Nestled under a Dark Sky area, we gazed upward in wonder, mesmerized by the endless cosmos. Around the campfire, we relished our stories, laughter echoing in the cool night air, feeling completely relaxed and connected.

The next morning, as we reluctantly began to pack up, we took one last opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary scenery. We knew this was not our last visit, especially since the San Rafael Swell had so much more waiting for us. As we drove away, we wore wide smiles, already dreaming about our next adventure in this breathtaking haven.
