Explore the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway and Red River Gorge
Eastern Kentucky’s Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB) and Red River Gorge Geological Area offer an offroad and outdoor experience unlike any other in the eastern U.S. With over 100 miles of mostly historic county roads weaving through Powell, Estill, Lee, Wolfe, and Menifee Counties, the DBBB delivers a blend of scenic gravel routes, paved connections, and challenging offroad trails—perfect for a multi-day overlanding adventure.
Top trails include:
- Spaas Creek – A scenic, moderately challenging trail with one of the few dispersed camping spots on the route.
- Pumpkin Hollow – Known for its fun creek crossing and a satisfying mix of terrain and forested climbs.
- Old Fincastle Road – A rock-crawler’s dream, complete with big obstacles and a dramatic water crossing at Walker Creek.
Note: ATVs and side-by-sides are prohibited. Only licensed, street-legal vehicles are allowed.
Camping is limited on-trail, but private campgrounds and two National Forest campgrounds—Whittleton and Koomer Ridge—are close by. Natural Bridge State Park in Slade serves as a popular basecamp with easy access to trails, lodging, and hiking.
Off the trail, the Red River Gorge offers some of the best hiking in the region, including the Sky Bridge, Grays Arch, and Rock Bridge trails. The area is second only to Utah in natural arches, and a scenic drive through the historic Nada Tunnel is a must.
Respect local communities by following Tread Lightly principles: stay on trail, minimize noise, and pack out what you pack in. The DBBB is a shining example of community-driven trail preservation—let’s keep it that way.
