Part of the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway, Kebler Pass is a fantastic high-mountain pass that travels between Crested Butte and Paonia, over 10,007 feet above sea level. This busy dirt road traverses through one of the largest aspen groves in the country, providing spectacular fall color viewing as the surrounding forests burst into vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold. Kebler Pass is a seasonal road used to access many other recreational opportunities. It should be on everyone's "Do Not Miss" list if you are looking for incredible fall colors or epic mountain views.

Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Located in the Gunnison National Forest, Kebler Pass is an easy, straight-through dirt road that gradually changes 3,600 feet over 31 miles. This is a hard-packed, well-maintained county road suitable for any passenger vehicle. The road starts and ends on pavement, with a few additional short sections of asphalt along the way. The road provides a spaciously wide drive at least 3 vehicles wide the entire length, but don't expect to be protected by any gaurdrails. Kebler Pass is a gold mine of recreational activities offering numerous camping options, hiking trailheads, fishing spots, rich wildlife activity, and dozens of additional dirt roads to explore.

Super easy dirt road with great views and camping. Fall colors were great but there’s a lot of other vehicles and roadside traffic.

This road is busy with lots of vehicles out for the fall colors. I can see why as the red and golden leaves were in full effect. There is nothing technical about this road, but keep an eye out as the traffic is almost non stop. This is a beautiful drive!

What a busy but beautiful road. I usually avoid busy, but the beauty outshined the traffic in this case. I would recommend this road to anyone looking for fall colors. Lost Lake at Waypoint 17 is a must-do side trip.

Leaves are just now changing. One more week to peak. Still beautiful though. If you're in Crested Butte to see the color, you should also drive the first five miles or so of Ohio Pass. It's a well marked turn to the south off of Kebler Pass road just a few miles out of CB (5 or so). A beautiful drive for Aspen color, and not nearly as busy as Kebler.
