Looping through the Bangs Canyon Special Recreation Area and located just a short drive from downtown Grand Junction, Billings Canyon Access Road was once the only way to access the extreme Billings Canyon Jeep Trail. Nowadays, that extreme trail can be accessed faster from the Third Flats Trailhead and Third Flats Road. This road is now used mainly to find reprieve from the scorching Western Colorado heat on the banks of the Gunnison River. The trail crosses broad barren plateaus, snakes along steep ridgelines, and passes unique rock formations as you make your way out of Rough Canyon.
