Highlight: Elevenmile Canyon Road
Just outside of Lake George, Colorado, Elevenmile Canyon is an oasis in this otherwise dry and airy part of Colorado. The scenery starts almost as soon as the road starts twisting through the canyon and continues all the way to the bottom of the 5.5-mile long reservoir that feeds the river. This remnant of the Midland Railroad is trafficked by hikers, bikers, campers, swimmers, and offers access to Wagon Tongue Road and the trails south of Lake George. Bring your camping chair and spend a warm afternoon with your feet in the water or come out in the winter to see the river in a frozen state. No matter the time of year, the scenery on this trail doesn’t disappoint and shouldn’t be missed. The Elevenmile Canyon Recreation area is an over 7600-acre area that offers a multitude of options for spending time in the Colorado outdoors. There are over 5 miles of hiking trails, renowned fishing in the reservoir and along the river, and plenty of areas to picnic and camp. Multiple campgrounds in the area total over 300 with some camping along the river itself.
