Verdi Lookout

Climbing high above the forests west of Verdi, the road to Verdi Peak Lookout is a rocky adventure that rewards with expansive views across the northern Sierra. The road leads to a rugged volcanic ridgeline where a fire lookout tower has watched over the surrounding forests since the 1930s, when the original L-4 cab was built for wildfire detection; that structure was replaced in 1983, and physically staffed until 1998. The site continues to perform watch duties today via digital cameras. The combination of rough wheeling, commanding views, and the chance to visit a working piece of Forest Service history makes the climb to Verdi Peak one of those short adventures that feels much bigger than its mileage suggests.
