Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Fern Ridge, labeled as trail 121 on the park map, is a point-to-point trail located within the western reserve of Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. This trail is a long and slow slog along the ridgeline as you traverse several lengthy rock gardens and maneuver between tightly growing trees. The trail is often used as an access road to several more difficult loops along the ridge, but Fern Ridge is a great trail to challenge newer and experienced drivers. The trail surface starts with mainly hard-packed soil and a few rock slabs and becomes substantially rockier the deeper into the trail you travel. Unlike many other trails within the park, Fern Ridge is not muddy, making it a great place to bring the rock crawlers.

This trail is best suited for modified vehicles with larger tires and lifts. Long-wheelbase vehicles such as Gladiators might find it extremely difficult to negotiate turns between tight trees.

Difficulty Accuracy: Spot On

Fern Ridge starts out a bit slow but continues to build and build in anticipation. Even the optional loops seem to start a bit light and get harder with each one. The trees can be tight and we found a few areas where we pushed rigs through with mere inches to spare... or so it seemed. I think this is a good trail to familiarize yourself with your vehicle. Get to know where your tires sit, where your differentials hang, what low hanging undercarriage parts get caught on rocks, and how far out your fenders stick. The optional loops are great for highly modified rigs, and the main trail provides a good alternative for someone who wants to follow and watch their bigger rig friends, but isn't ready yet for the same obstacles as they are.
