Jumbo Mountain is an enjoyable side trip off of Moon Gulch, near Rollinsville, Colorado. Back in the mining boom, it was part of a network of roads connecting Moon Gulch, Jenny Lind Gulch and South Boulder Creek (Moffat Road). Most of those connections have long since been closed and all but disappeared but the spur out the ridge above Moon Gulch and the loop around the east face of Jumbo Mountain remain. The center portion and a little of the north side of the loop are pretty well-maintained providing access to a modern communications tower. The spur and the major portion of the loop are a bit rougher and wilder. There is nothing that is overly difficult, but it is just hard enough to need 4wd.
You spend much of your time in the trees, especially on the spur and the southern half of the loop. But as you descend the northern half of the loop, there are places where the forest opens up giving you beautiful views of the South Boulder Creek valley and the mountains to the north. Overall, it is a fun little adventure.
