The San Juan National Forest in southwest Colorado has some truly memorable trails to explore. To get the complete experience you'll need to spend a couple of days or longer camping under the stars. For that true backcountry experience you have to go a little further than the main gravel roads. Rampart Hill is an excellent route to some of the more primitive campsites located above the town of Mancos. Be sure to explore the nearby trails like Echo Basin and Helmet Peak for a more challenging trail ride. There is also West Mancos Road, the main route that will connect you with a vast network of wonderful 4x4 trails.
