The San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado has numerous opportunities to summit mountain passes and visit old mining sites. Some of these trails can be quite difficult, remote and intimidating to a newcomer or novice 4x4 owner. The Columbus Basin trail is ideal for users wanting a backcountry off-road experience without all the stresses and crowds some of the more popular trails to the north may bring. The drive up La Plata Canyon leading to the trailhead is wonderful and very easy, with plenty of opportunity for great camping. The reward at the summit of Columbus Basin is a breathtaking panorama of the scenery below. You can also walk around the old mining equipment that still remains at the top.
