Highlight: Rosemont Junction
Established as a smelter town for the nearby Helvetia District copper mines, Rosemont Junction provides a wonderful afternoon of shady exploration through some of Arizona's hill country. This trail heads straight for the Santa Rita Mountains then turns south to parallel it for several miles, providing stunning views of 'Old Baldy' and Gunsight Pass (now closed). Before you get to those ridge running views, you will be treated to some of the finest large tree riparian areas in Southern Arizona. Wildlife sightings are common in the canyons. You might get lucky and spook up a mule deer, or a herd of coatimundi with their tails up in the air. Lots of folks have discovered this area to be favorable to setting up targets for recreational shooting so use caution when driving through. Unfortunately, this area may one day be entirely consumed by copper mine tailings if the Rosemont Copper company begins operations, so, NOW is the time to get out there and explore.
