If you are up for a small challenge, some amazing scenery, and bragging rights, you should head to Guajalote Flat. You will travel through juniper, oak and pine forests on your way to the top of the mountain and Guajalote Flat. So close to the border that your cell phone will roam into Mexican phone service, the terrain is stunning. This large, shade tree sprinkled flat area abounds with good camping spots. (Although you may feel apprehensive about camping here, being just 4 1/2 miles from the US/Mexico international border!) Guajalote means Turkey in Spanish and once you get to the edge of the flat, you'll wish you had feathers for you see, your bragging rights come with your descent of the 24% grade "Insane Downhill" section that drops 1,000' in less than a mile.
