Just north of Helen, Georgia lies Corbin Creek Road. Twisting and turning all the way to the top of Tray Mountain, this popular trail is the northernmost and smoothest way to Tray Gap, a small parking area and the intersection with the famous Appalachian Trail. In addition to some great camping spots, there are stunning views to the northwest overlooking the Chinquapin Ridge - especially in the winter months when there are no leaves on the trees blocking the view. So whether you're out day hiking the Appalachian Trail, looking for some secluded camping, or just out for a beautiful mountain drive, give Corbin Creek Road a look.

Trail Difficulty and Assessment

Trail Navigation

Corbin Creek Road can be ran in either direction. Heading north is primarily downhill while heading south is primarily uphill. This formerly smooth gravel road has been worn down from use and weather over the years and is now quite rocky with a few small ruts. Grades are slight and the road is adequately wide with plenty of passing areas. Although passable by most passenger vehicles in all conditions except snow and ice, ground clearance is helpful and makes for a much more pleasurable ride.

A little rougher than expected. Nothing major. However, more than a simple gravel road. A few minor ruts near north end.

The trail itself is a rather mundane gravel road, but the trees during the color change in October are spectacular! There was quite a bit of use near the top of the trail with parked cars where visitors were in the area hiking. We took Corbin Creek Road up the mountain and then Tray Mountain down. We also had the opportunity to speak with the local forest ranger about roads in the area. The third road at the summit intersection, Chimney Mountain Road, is permanently closed because of resource damage and irresponsible off-road use. Please stay on the trail so we don't lose any more trails!
