Highlight: Matukat Road (aka Goose Creek Road)
Matukat Road, aka Goose Creek Road, is a very busy dirt road that runs from Deckers to Lake George through the Hayman burn scar. The Hayman fire scorched over 113,000 acres of forest. It was the largest in Colorado state history until the 2020 fire season when the Pine Gulch and then Cameron Peak fires overtook that dubious record. The heat was so intense that it literally killed the soil in places and stunted the forest’s overall recovery. With the trees and old growth gone, this fire damage to the forest has created some epic views of the terrain in its wake. After about 2 miles in, the views start to open, and sweeping views of the valleys and nearby mountains are visible nearly the entire way towards the Lake George area. Since Matukat Road is a relatively easy trail, locals and visitors alike shouldn’t miss the scenery and peek into Colorado’s recent history.
