Trail Information

Highlights

The Rampart Range area offers year round adventure for those who visit. In the summer months, wildflowers abound with many areas to camp and get away from civilization are available without having to travel hours outside of Colorado Springs. Autumn offers beautiful views of the color changing aspens and in the Winter months, permits are available through the Forest Service for families to harvest their own Christmas trees. Gove Creek is unique in that it is very secluded being as far north as it sits on Rampart Range Road. The summer traffic is much lighter in this area. In addition the northern end of the Rampart Range is unique in that there is many areas of breathtaking exposed granite giving the scenery a somewhat Yosemite National Park feel to it.

This one has FAR MORE snow than most of the other roads we drove on Rampart Range (346, 347, 347C, and 351) this day, March 25th. Our group of six from Colorado Land Cruisers didn't have any problems, but found that ruts in the snow behave like train tracks--you're just not going to easily steer out of them! The "needle eye" turn-around at the top is exposed to sun, so there is little snow present. This spot is great for camping or just an afternoon outing with friends, a campfire, and some food.

The road is rougher than the last time I drove it; near WP 5 (pond) there are ruts and exposed rocks that will grab your axle/differential if you don't pick a good line. The campsite at the top is in good shape (clear of deadfall and very little trash). Overall, with recent afternoon rains, this area is much more lush and green.

Fair amount of snow on the trail still. Would recommend very good mud/snow tires to do the entire trail. Because of the snow, steering out of the ruts was not possible, and pin striping was common.

Nice trail. Some ruts but fairly easy with good clearance. Camped at the site described at waypoint 3. Great spot but SO much broken glass. People need to get theIr sh*t together. We did our best to clean up.

Great trail for a stock subaru or taller. Ran the whole thing with Illinois gulch.
