Trail Information

Highlights

Sawmill Road West is a nice scenic off-road drive starting in the desert valley and climbing to an elevation of 5600 feet. Scenic landscape starts with brush and dirt/gravel roads and progresses to pine trees and snow during the winter season. Sawmill Road West is an optional entrance from the north into the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, which connects to Mormon Well Road. There are scattered camp sites along the trail, some big enough to fit multiple vehicles and tents.

A tooth rattling drive over 11 miles of open desert. This is the road out from Mormon Well if you don't want to backtrack. It's easy enough and comprises what lands on nearly every Jeep group's must do list for easy trails. Happier times can be had elsewhere. That said, given the pictures in the navigation guide above, it might be more fun and interesting during the winter with snow on the ground at higher altitudes.

My nephew moved from Connecticut to Las Vegas and has never been offroading. One of the best ways to show him some great trails, different vegetation and some of the wildlife, was to take him on a tour of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge just north of Las Vegas. The weather was 10-15 degrees cooler and there was no one else on the trails. He had a great time, especially when I let him drive a portion of a trail. Sawmill Road West was open and in good condition. The weather was sunny with scattered clouds with a temperature in the mid-'50s. It is a nice, easily driven trail with great views of the surrounding desert. We prefer to drive back to Las Vegas this way instead of backtracking Mormon Well Road. The visitor center can provide information about the wildlife and desert landscape.
