Hero: Mack's Canyon Spur
small-sr Icon
Mack's Canyon Spur is a .42 mile moderate out and back trail at 7,757' elevation with 2 or 3 smaller dispersed campsites. The trail begins with a narrow, rocky tree and brush tunnel that may not be suitable for large vehicles unless you don't mind pinstriping. The trail washes out enough to provide a small off-camber obstacle less than a quarter-mile into the drive before returning into another narrow brush tunnel with low-hanging branches. At the .4 mile mark lies the most challenging part of this trail. You have to choose between two narrow gaps between trees. The left line is a short, steep hill with loose dirt. The right line is a slightly wider path between the trees but with loose dirt and moguls. There is a small campsite at the top of this hill. It is also a good place to plan to turn around. There are very few places to do so on this trail, especially for large vehicles. Be aware of heavy rains as this is a slot canyon.
