Los Alamos Road is a straight-through 4-mile trail with compacted dirt and a slight amount of loose rock. The route is easily traversed by any high clearance vehicle. Mildly off-camber sections exist along the route and at arroyo entrances and exits. The bottoms of the arroyos are soft sand.

Camping in the park is restricted to designated sites only. There is one designated site along this trail, 1 mile from the southeast end.

Permits

Permits are required to drive into the Park's property, and must be displayed on your windshield. Visitors can check-in at Fort Leaton State Historic Site, the Barton Warnock Visitor Center, or the Sauceda Ranger Station. The Sauceda Ranger Station is open from 8 am to 6 pm. Fort Leaton State Historic Site and the Barton Warnock Visitor Centers are open from 8 am to 4:30 pm. There are self-serve driving permit stations that require cash if you are coming in after hours.

Dogs

The park does have a policy regarding dogs.

  • Dogs must remain within ¼ mile of campsites or designated roads and are allowed only on the Closed Canyon Trail and the Hoodoos Trail on FM 170.
  • Dogs are not allowed on any other trails in the backcountry.

Note: Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, these policies do not apply to persons relying on service dogs.
