North Cave Valley Road (also known as Cave Valley Road) is a mostly single-lane, mildly rough-to-smooth dirt road that winds easily through open high-desert valleys of dense sagebrush and scattered rabbitbrush, with occasional patches of wildflowers and denser pinyon-juniper woodlands near the hills. The southernmost 5 miles cross private property, while the western side of the southern half borders the Mount Grafton Wilderness Area; the northern end reaches Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historical Park. The graded surface is firm-packed dirt and light gravel, with mild roughness, occasional tire ruts, and short stretches of exposed rock or soft spots, and remains suitable for all vehicles under normal dry conditions.

Camping is nonexistent along the trail. Opportunities exist along the easternmost mile of Shingle Shortcut Road, at Patterson Pass Campground near Highway 93 on Patterson Pass Road, and at Willow Creek Campground near Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historical Park at the northern end.
