ForestBig Bear Lake Road is located in the Custer Gallatin National Forest in the Gallatin Range, south of Bozeman near Gallatin Gateway, Montana. This short trail climbs through tall conifers on a rocky, sometimes muddy road to a quiet little lake about halfway up. Big Bear Lake is quite beautiful, framed by marsh grass, fallen logs, and forested slopes, and it's a great spot to stop, look around, or cool off with a swim on a hot day. Further up, the trees open to a view of the valley out toward Belgrade before the road narrows and finishes at a small turnaround. There are a few nice campsites along the way, making this an easy half-day drive or a relaxed overnight during the summer and fall season.
