Nestled in the hills north of the old historic mining town of Idaho City, Elk Ridge Road is an awe-inspiring drive through the Boise National Forest. The trees give way to open ridgelines offering stunning panoramic views of the Boise Mountains.
This windy single-lane road with an exposed cliffside is rated as easy; there are a few rocky areas, but any high-clearance vehicle can handle this drive with ease. There are no developed campgrounds along the trail, but there are a few opportunities for dispersed camping on one of the many spurs. As this trail is part of an extensive trail system, it makes a great loop with Elk Creek.
