The Grangeville Salmon Road is a well-maintained, mostly two-lane, gravel road suitable for any vehicle with reasonable ground clearance. There are sections with moderate washboards and potholes. The most significant hazards are dust and blind curves. The road climbs from the Salmon River to about one-third of the way to Grangeville, where it becomes paved for the rest of the way to town. Much of the road provides excellent, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
There are no dispersed campsites along this dirt road. However, there are campgrounds down along the Salmon River and along the paved section of road heading to Grangeville.
