Montrose County Road P77 begins at the top of Cerro Summit off US 50 at roughly 7,966 feet in elevation and runs about 10 miles to an intersection with Cimarron Road. The road serves as a shortcut to Silver Jack Reservoir and Owl Pass for anyone approaching from the west on US 50. A large pullout at the start provides plenty of room to air down before setting out.

The trail begins with an immediate climb into the mountains. The road is smooth gravel, with rock generally no larger than blueberries, so the surface is easy to drive on in dry conditions. Depending on the time of year and recent weather, expect shallow mud holes and small washouts. The road is wide enough for expedition vehicles to fit comfortably, making it a great fit for larger rigs.

P77 wraps through the high country and is bordered by private property and ranches for much of its length, so stay on the road and watch for posted signs. There are no camping spots along the trail. The scenery is mountain views with plenty of aspen trees, which makes it a particularly nice drive in the fall when the trees are changing.

There is no winter maintenance on this road. Thus, it may be impassable during the winter months.
