Big Mesa Road is a short drive to big views. The view from the top of Big Mesa is like no other in the Gunnison area. From mountain peaks and valleys to Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Gunnison River, it's one of the best sunset spots in the area. It's an easy dirt road for about 75%, while the other 25% is rough and bumpy with small protruding rocks. There is a short climb up to the mesa that is doable in any high clearance vehicle. There are several spur roads, one leading to the ruins of an old stone home. On the flat top, there are two modern structures. One is a weather station, and the other is an aircraft navigation beacon.
There are several places to camp along the trail for one or two rigs, while the space at the top is nearly unlimited, including right along the bluff of Big Mesa.
