Rocky terrain and rugged Mojave scenery make this drive an appealing outing for those who enjoy a slower, more demanding backcountry route. Yates Wells West Road winds through desert hills, offering an opportunity to explore the landscape at a pace dictated by the rough ground.
The entire trail follows Segment 2 of the Eastern Mojave Heritage Trail. This roughly 190-mile segment is part of the larger 733-mile route, supported through the efforts of the Bureau of Land Management and the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association.
The trail is very rocky and rugged, requiring careful tire placement and slow travel. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, and drivers should allow extra time to negotiate the rougher sections. A cattle gate along the route must be opened to pass through and securely closed afterward.
There are no camping opportunities along this trail.
