NS085 winds through the western foothills of the Sacramento Mountains before reaching the broad alluvial plain of Ward Valley. Much of the route offers open views toward the distant Piute Mountains. A short side trip on nearby NS240 leads to the ruins of the Capitan Mine, where a collapsed mining camp building and several abandoned vehicles remain scattered around the site.
No established campsites are obvious from NS085 itself, but several flat, open areas along the route can work well for dispersed camping. Better camping can be found by following the connecting NS240 to the Capitan Mine area, where existing rock fire rings and a larger campsite sit near an abandoned 1938 Buick Special Series 40.
Most of the route follows flat, hard-packed sand with only occasional rocky sections and shallow water-worn ruts. In dry conditions, it is generally suitable for most high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles.
