Piute Crossing provides a scenic corridor along the edge of the Piute Mountains Wilderness, with close-up views of the range’s dramatic rock spires and broad vistas east across Ward Valley toward the Sacramento Mountains.
The entire route is part of Eastern Mojave Heritage Trail (EMHT) Segment 4, where the route continues from the west end onto Little Piute Trail. Segment 4 is one section of the larger 733-mile EMHT network and offers a 145-mile tour through some of the most remote terrain in the Eastern Mojave. The trail network is managed through a partnership between the Bureau of Land Management and the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association.
Only a few previously disturbed campsites are visible from the route, but several other flat, open areas along the trail can work well for dispersed camping.
Most of the route follows flat, hard-packed sand with only occasional rocky sections. In dry conditions, it is generally suitable for most high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles.
