Mailbox Trail hugs the border of the Turtle Mountains Wilderness and provides a staging area for hikers and equestrians traveling the trails leading deep into the wilderness. The trail provides a convenient western access to the Lost Arch Mining camp from its end when continuing onto the Lost Arch Inn Road. The start of the trail is marked with a mailbox stuffed with food and water donations.
Dispersed camping is available along the trail with an existing campsite about 0.5 miles from the east end.
The surface is gravel that can be managed with a two-wheel drive vehicle, but with adequate ground clearance to manage the uneven surface.
