Accompanied by the beautiful scenery of the Stepladder Mountains to the east and the Turtle Mountains to the west, Turtle Mountain Road follows a corridor between those two untouched wilderness areas. Along the way, several hiking trails invite exploration into the wilderness areas on either side, with perhaps the most interesting detour into the historic Lost Arch Mining Camp. The road ends at the border of the Old Women's Mountains Wilderness.
Over its entire length, there are only a few dispersed campsites with existing rock campfire rings visible from the road, with the best camping found about 10.5 miles from the eastern trailhead following a short diversion into the Lost Arch Mining Camp, where several dispersed and two improved campsites can be found.
The first ten miles of the road are over a wide, flat, maintained road, but from there the road changes significantly to a two-track desert trail over rocky hardpack, with the last six miles over a soft sandy desert floor. A four wheel drive high clearance vehicle is recommended to travel the entire length of the road, with the four wheel drive helpful in the eastern soft sandy section.
