Homer Mountain is a cross-country trek through the Mojave National Preserve. Bordering the Mojave Wilderness over much of its length, travelers are rewarded with fantastic desert scenery across an unpopulated desert landscape, with the Piute Mountains providing a backdrop.
Most of the trail is flat with no obstacles, but once into the Homer Mountain foothills, the path becomes twisty, rocky, and steep over several deep washes. This trail can be managed in a two-wheel drive with good all-terrain tires, but the frequent dips and washes across the trail will require a vehicle with some ground clearance.
The best dispersed campsites are found in the Homer Mountain Foothills, along the eastern third of the trail, where the higher elevation provides an overlook of the surrounding desert.
