Hero: Ivanpah-Lanfair Road
small-sr Icon

Ivanpah-Lanfair Road traverses the eastern portion of the Mojave National Preserve, passing some of the desert's most interesting and iconic destinations.  Near the northern end, the road passes Vanderbilt ghost town and the abandoned Goldome Mill, with its largely intact ball mill and machinery for extracting gold from hard rock mines in the area. At Ivanapah-Lanfair Roads' halfway point, you will cross the iconic Mojave Road and eventually reach Route 66 at its southern end. All the while, the road provides outstanding views of the surrounding mountains and impressive Joshua Tree forests.  Numerous abandoned mines and ruins are reached from its over 25 intersecting trails and spurs.

There are no campsites directly next to the trail, but many wonderful dispersed campsites can be found shortly off the road along its intersecting trails. One example of camping found off the trail is the outstanding campsites at Mine Landings, reached from the Slaughterhouse Spring trail.

This is an easy, wide, flat gravel road suitable for passenger vehicles and trailers, with only occasional water-worn dips or cattle crossings to be aware of. However, if planning to explore the intersecting trails, an experienced driver using a four-wheel drive vehicle with ground clearance is required.
