Product Review: Tuffy Flip-Up License Plate Mount for Roller Fairlead

Being an avid off-roader it’s only natural to want increased armor on your vehicle to protect from the obstacles of the trail. Usually, one of the first pieces of armor purchased is a steel front bumper which is a great upgrade and a must-have for an off-road rig. Unfortunately, most aftermarket bumper manufacturers leave out one important detail, a license plate location. While some people (like myself) have found ways to cope with this issue, none of those solutions are as convenient and permanent as the Flip-Up License Plate Mount from Tuffy Security Products.

On the 2000 Grand Cherokee, the License plate is mounted above the fairlead blocking air follow through the radiator. On the 1995 Cherokee, the plate is mounted below the fairlead leaving it vulnerable to damage and potentially being completely lost. Both locations “work”, but are subpar at best.

Once the fairlead mount is installed, both problems, on both vehicles, instantly solved. It is below the radiator opening up the grill for the most airflow potential, but keeping it high enough to not affect the break over angle. It’s the perfect place for the front license plate and doesn’t affect the functionality of the fairlead or winch at all.

When the winch is needed just flip the plate up and get to work. Extremely simple to use and practical. Installation is a breeze as well. Remove the pins on the vertical rollers of the fairlead, replace with a bolt and self-locking nut, set the License Plate Mount on the fairlead and tighten nuts until there is no play on the bolt but the rollers move freely. Just like that, done!
