Remote and isolated, Dug Out Creek travels far out into the San Rafael Desert to a nondescript point along the San Rafael River. The southern portion of the trail connects to Saucer Basin. 98% of the trail is graded sand, but once you reach the far northern end at the view overlooking the riverbed area, a gigantic sand dune waits to trap the unsuspecting traveler. Once past the dune, the insanely bumpy final half-mile is making you realize it really wasn't worth it. No camping was found along the trail. Note that even the southern section can be extremely bumpy in the fall/winter because cattle walk the roads.
