Hero: Burr Trail
small-sr Icon
John Atlantic Burr pioneered a route off the Escalante down into the Waterpocket Fold to move his cattle to market. Today the Burr Trail moves mostly wide-eyed travelers through southern Utah's scenic grandeur. The trail's highlight is the switchbacks that climb a torturously winding 900 feet. But the traverse through Long Canyon is also a scenic feast. Upper Muley Twist Canyon and its views of Strike Valley and the Waterpocket Fold is a very worthy side trip. The trail crosses the southern reaches of the Capitol Reef National Park and alternates between dirt and pavement. The dirt is often the better ride. Deer Creek Campground is small but very convenient. The trail ends in the tiny hamlet of Boulder, which is renowned for the excellent food at the Hells Backbone Grill.
