These are more than just great trails. This lists offers a front-row seat to the universe. These trails are far enough from major cities to provide excellent opportunities for stargazing. Once the engines are off and the dust settles, the real show begins.
To help describe how dark the sky is in each location, each trail has been assigned a Bortle Scale rating. The Bortle Scale ranges from Class 1 to Class 9, measuring how much light pollution affects the night sky.
Class 1 represents the darkest skies on Earth, where the Milky Way is vivid and thousands of stars are visible.
Class 9 represents heavily light-polluted urban skies where only the brightest stars can be seen.
The trails on this list fall somewhere between Bortle Class 1 and Class 4, meaning the skies are dark enough to clearly see the Milky Way, meteor showers, satellites, and countless stars that disappear under city lights.
If you enjoy combining off-roading with camping, photography, or quiet nights under the stars, these trails offer some of the best places to look up, and experience the sky the way it was meant to be seen.
