Hi! I'm Wade. After 43 years as a pilot, split evenly between flying fighters for the Air Force and Boeing 737s for the airlines, my feet are firmly planted on the ground. Seems I spent a lot of my flying time looking out the cockpit window thinking, "Yep, I could drive that trail." My trips range from a few days to a month. Most are solo in my silver 4Runner named Bullit. We range over all the southwest exploring remote places and trying to get as much dirt under the wheels as possible. Occasionally I get in some hiking, backpacking, and bushcraft as well. My most ambitious Overlanding plans include a trip to Tuktoyaktuk and Dead Horse when travel restrictions permit. Sharing my experiences as a member of the Trails Offroad crew, instructing at Overland Expo, and hosting the Gaia GPS Offroad podcast are true pleasures. Hope to see you on the trail soon.

(within last 6 months)
East Clear Creek (05/02/2022)
The washout at Bear Canyon between Waypoints 15 and 16 has not been repaired. The Forest Service may never repair it since Bear Canyon regularly has flash floods. The south end of East Clear Creek / FR 95 can be accessed off Rim Road.
Big Bug Mesa (04/28/2022)
Big Bug Mesa is closed due to the proximity of the Crooks Fire and firefighting efforts. Please avoid the area.
Poland Road (04/20/2022)
Poland Road and Senator Highway are currently closed due to the Crooks Wildfire. The northeastern corner of the fire is currently at the intersection of Senator or Highway and Poland Road.

Planet Ranch Road (02/07/2022)
Very interesting and long drive through this remote part of Arizona. Saw only two other people over a 2-day span.
Loves Camp (02/06/2022)
I have only a theory of what Loves Camp was and how it ended. If you know the story, please share it.
McGuffie Cabin (02/06/2022)
While the drive was pretty nice, the highlight is definitely the cabin.
Old Alamo Road (02/05/2022)
This was an adventurous drive with an extremely remote feeling. Didn't see anyone on the trail. Great night camping at Waypoint 3.
Signal Road (02/04/2022)
Easy road to get deep into this area. Signal Mine is interesting. The views along the way are pretty good. Saw a few feral burros.
Maggie's Slot Canyon (01/29/2022)
Met up with Cory to drive Maggie's. Always nice to get the guided tour from the man who wrote the trail guide! There's just something about driving a sandy wash with high stone walls on each side. We drove the wash opposite the ways it is listed. Was certainly happy to have Cory spot me through the tight S-turn at Waypoint 15. Had just a couple of inches to spare with my 4Runner. Nothing wider or longer is going to get through that one, at least not south to north. I'm always a sucker for hiking slot canyons. Rawhide was reminiscent of slot canyons in Utah, just different geology. Meeting Keith and Karna at the trailhead was a treat.
MST&T (01/11/2022)
Easy access to the deeper Kofa Wildlife Refuge. The view at the end of the trail is impressive.
