Land Between the Lakes is a popular destination of those looking to escape the city and view the Lakes of Kentucky and Barkley. Access over 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, 200 miles of paved roads, 500 miles of trails, and 170,000 acres of forests and open lands. While most people stick to the pavement to see the Land Between the Lakes, the many off-road trails in the area offer a great way see the backcountry without the crowds. if you hang with the adventure crowd, this trail offers not only off-roading, but also great swimming in the summer along Lake Kentucky and Lake Barkley. In addition, you can enjoy some of the best camping, hunting, fishing, horse riding, off-highway vehicle driving and environmental-conservation education programs around. You’ll also appreciate spending time at Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum, Woodlands Nature Station, and the Golden Pond Planetarium. Take a week or a day to explore Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. There’s something for everyone!

Smarts Ranch Road or 3NO3 as it is known by locals and off roaders, is a mellow trail leading into the heart of the forest. There is not many side trails off of Smarts Ranch Road but it does paint some beautiful pictures of the lush green forest, as well as beautiful sunsets and sunrises in the early morning and evening hours.

A short but exciting off-road trail, 3N07A is a great little trail that offers a unique obstacle at the Coyote Crag rock formation in Holcomb Valley near Big Bear Lake, California. If you have a good spotter, or your vehicle is rather narrow, you will likely squeeze between the boulders from which this trail got it name with no problems, but if you get off the line just barely, well you might lose a mirror or worse, add some character the body of your vehicle. Needless to say, when passing through Holcomb Valley or if you are out exploring 3N16 – Holcomb Valley Road, make sure you swing through and enjoy the natural beauty of this amazing, moderate difficulty trail.

3N08 is the perfect trail for the new and moderately experienced off-road enthusiast in the forest of Big Bear, CA. The trail provides plenty of dense forest scenery and some 4x4 challenges. The most notable obstacle on the trail is a rocky hill climb on the east end of the trail. This hill climb is a 40 degree climb with several moderate sized rocks and ledges. At roughly 30 feet long, the hill climb is just big enough to get the heart pumping and for you to second guess your line of attack.

Part of the John Bull Trail network, this eastern portion of this trail is commonly bypassed by offroaders traveling John Bull West. Along this route, you will find it somewhat easier obstacles then its more difficult west side. But don't be confused, this trail will still challenge most drivers with is rock crawling, and is known for it carnage just like its west half.

The trail is mostly a dirt road with some scenic views but also provides a loop for several trails that connect back to Holcomb Valley Campground. Along the route, you will pass through the dense forest of Holcomb Valley.

One of the shorter trails on the mountain range, 3N11 takes you to the north end of the mountains where you will be presented with one of the most amazing overlooks of the High Desert. Some even say you can see Vegas on a clear day. Navigable in most stock 4x4's, 3N11 is a perfect trail for most offroad enthusiasts that are looking for some great adventures and amazing views.

One of the lesser known trails of Holcomb Valley, 3N12C / 2N09F / 2N09A is a great little trail to get out into the forest and get away from the crowds. In dry conditions, this is a great trail for new drivers. But when it gets wet, this is probably the muddiest trail in the Holcomb Valley area. The mud is known to get over 36 inches deep and is a sticky mess that will swallow even built up trucks.

3N12 is a cool little cut over that passes through the dense forest of Holcomb Valley. The trail eventually drops you directly in Holcomb Valley Farm on the north end. Many people use 3N12 as a nice trail drive when visiting the area since the amazing forest views and a path all 4x4's can traverse.

3N16 provides a scenic, enjoyable drive for all offroad enthusiasts. At roughly 26 miles long, this overland trail will take you through the backwoods of the San Bernardino National Forest. Along with some great views, 3N16 also has a historic route for which more information can be found at Big Bear Discovery Center or the trail review, Gold Fever Trail.

3N16 is the main connector between most of the trails in Big Bear including Holcomb Creek, Dishpan Springs, John Bull, White Mountain, Gold Mountain, and many more. Just be warned that there are several water crossings along this trail that can swell up in flash flood conditions. While snow on this trail can get over 5 feet deep in the winter. Please plan accordingly and travel in pairs.

The views along this trail are unique as for you can see Johnson Valley, Lucerne Valley, Cougar Buttes, Apple Valley, Barstow, Calico, and at night see lights of Las Vegas.

Forest Route 3N34D is the 4x4 trail to Devil's Hole; a dark deep swirling pool of water in Deep Creek, north of Lake Arrowhead, California. Devil's Hole is a popular warm weather destination. This trail offers the chance to combine some 4x4 adventure with a cool dip in the creek, some relaxation near the waters edge, fishing or even hiking (The Pacific Crest Trail cuts through this trail near the water). In summer months, plan to come early and stay late to avoid the 4x4 traffic jams on this narrow, winding off-road trail.
