Trail Information

Highlights

This backcountry road is located an hour away from Lake Havasu City, Arizona and was built for mining in the early 1900s. Ideal Mine trail is a scenic way to bypass the washout on Buck Mountain Road just past Palo Verde Mine and enables access to the Ideal Mine. Ideal Mine Trail and Ideal Mine are located within three Meteorite strewn fields, Franconia, Buck Mountains, and Palo Verde. This trail allows you to easily access more areas off the beaten roads to get out and look for meteorites or simply to see Ideal Mine. Further, you can continue south into the foothills of the Mohave Mountain Range and see the Arizona Yucca Mine and numerous other mining prospects near there. Looking for space rocks? If so, winter is a great time of year to get out here and hunt for meteorites!

We ran this trail after completing the Through the Bucks trail. It got us back to a utility road with an interesting run through the wash. One tight spot where the horizontal rock is very jagged, but not a real problem. Not as many flowers as Todd saw three years ago, but still an interesting trail.

I ran this trail backward after driving up Palo Verde Mine, it's always interesting to see what you missed when you usually run the other way. The wash was smooth and a nice drive. With the sun low to the south, one of the rock faces glimmered with what appeared to be pyrite crystals. The wash was nice and smooth so far, so I followed it back to National Old Trails Road and popped out just 100 feet east of Waypoint 8. The tree just past Waypoint 3 is starting to droop pretty low, there is a lightly traveled bypass to the west weaving between the bushes.

Nice day for a ride. Trail was completely fresh due to the summer rains in the wash. Only one set of tracks prior to us. This trail gets very little use which make it all the better, as you will have plenty of peace and quiet for a lunch stop. Always one of our favorites.

Today was hot, with no breeze whatsoever down in the wash. The lack of recent moisture really shows on this trail. The Palo Verde trees are somewhat green, but the weeds and other fauna aren't even trying.

The washout between Palo Verde Mine and Ideal Mine is easy enough to get through with a short wheelbase and a little extra clearance allowing us to make a short loop back to Palo Verde Mine rather than backtracking. This is the perfect time to be out exploring the desert, very comfortable temps.
