Trail Information

Highlights

This trail is a great addition to the Bulldog Canyon trail or for just a short scenic off-road trail run in the Arizona desert. This easy and scenic trail will bring you through just a small portion of what the region has to offer. Accessing the area is easy and offers the user a wonderful 4x4 experience in the Superstition Mountains without all the tourist traffic. It's considered part of the Bulldog Canyon OHV area which includes portions of the "Great Western Trail" in Arizona, traveling through the Tonto National Forest's Goldfield Mountains and Sonoran Desert. It offers incredible views of the nearby Superstition Mountains and is home to some of Arizona's most infamous legends, like the Lost Dutchmen Gold. At one time the Bulldog Mine was one of the richest gold mines in the country but has now been reclaimed by the desert. The Goldfield Mountain area is littered with towering cliffs and rugged canyons that are a welcome break from the flat desert valley. You can hike for years in the many unmarked canyons that litter the region. Who knows what you might find out there.

Arizona National Forests and State Lands are back open for travel. There are still some very important fire restrictions in place. These restrictions can often change by specific areas.

Tonto National Forest officials will close the state’s largest national forest due to ongoing extreme fire danger beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 25. The forest is implementing this forest closure as a precaution to protect the health and safety of the public, employees and firefighters by reducing the risk of human-caused fires. No one is allowed in the closure area, including Forest Service personnel, unless they are responding to a wildfire or other emergency or patrolling to ensure enforcement of the closure. The order shall remain in effect until July 31, 2021 or until rescinded, whichever occurs first. Residents or businesses using roads in the restricted area to the extent necessary to access their private property are exempt.

This was my first off-road trail on two wheels. It was challenging, but I didn't dump the bike and only got stuck for a few minutes. Didn't run into any other riders or campers on trail. I think I accidentally rode beyond the end of the trail, as things got a little rough after I encountered a wash and realized I'd gone in about 4 miles.

This trail was a blast. Not a lot of other people around and once we got to the north end we rode the wash for about 3/4 miles which I would rate a 4-5.
