Trail Information

Highlights

10 Miles north of Lucerne Valley in the BLM Ord Mountain subregion lies a hidden valley and dry lakebed that many do not know existence. Tyler Valley is nestled south of Ord Mountain with Erickson Dry Lakebed at the valley's southern base. The Tyler Valley host old mining ruins, Indian Circles and on rare occasions I've seen skilled pilots land their planes on the 1 mile long dry lakebed. As you head north out of the valley towards Ord Mountain the trail will traverse the southern side of the mountain as you leave the valley behind you. The last section of the trail will challenge your skills and rig with steep rutted trails and occasional rock obstacles. However, once you reach the end of the trail, you'll be rewarded with fantastic views (especially if you stay for the sunset).

There might be a lot of confusion lately with the San Bernardino National Forest order ( No. 05-12-00-23-03 ) closing almost all forest trails in southern California. This trail is still open.

Enjoyed running this route on Thanksgiving day. Trail is open, and views are fantastic! Just as Ben says, the final section will challenge your skills and your rig; I definitely had a couple of white-knuckle moments, but was glad I pushed thru.

Trail is open but it's still hard to spot the right turn off at waypoint 7. I stacked some rocks to better identify the right turn at waypoint 7. Great views from the end of the trail high on the side of Ord Mountain looking west towards the sunset. Best time to visit this trail is the late afternoon to take full advantage of the sunsets (plus you are heading east up the mountain away from the direct sunlight).

Recent rains made for plenty of water and mud on Erickson Dry lakebed en route to the mine. Of course we had to make numerous runs through the mud - best fun anyone can have in a Jeep but makes for plenty of hours of clean up (if you are into that thing).
