La Sal Pass is located just outside Moab in the southeastern La Sal Mountains. The trail climbs out of the valley via Pack Creek from the Moab side. This area was hit by a devastating wildfire in 2021, resulting in a road closure. The road is now back open, but be mindful of washouts and erosion, which are common following a wildfire. The western side of the pass is more difficult than the eastern side. From Pack Creek, the trail climbs through tight vegetation, small boulder fields, and narrow talus shelf sections. The summit features hiking trailheads and amazing views of Mount Tukuhnikivatz and Mount Peale. The east side resembles a maintained county road and is passable by passenger vehicles. Campsites are minimal on the west side, but several sites are near the summit. The east side has plentiful dispersed camping opportunities. The trail is suitable for high-clearance stock 4x4 vehicles with a low range.
