The Owyhee Uplands Backcountry Byway, also known as Juniper Mountain/Mud Flat Road, is a scenic road located in the southwestern region of Idaho. It is a 103-mile-long route that passes through remote and rugged landscapes, offering breathtaking views of the Owyhee Canyonlands, high deserts, and rolling hills. The byway is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, camping, and wildlife watching.

Many areas along the trail allow dispersed camping. Campers should be aware of private property signs to avoid trespassing. North Fork Campground, situated along the North Owyhee River, is the only established campground along this trail and provides basic amenities, including pit toilets, picnic tables, and firepits.

The road is well-maintained, but sections of the road are narrow and winding. Be prepared for changing weather conditions. The high desert experiences sudden temperature changes and storms.

There is no fuel or cell service along this trail. The closest fuel service to the trail is Jordan Valley at the western end and Grandview at the eastern end.

The Owyhee Uplands Backcountry Byway is a must-visit destination for those who appreciate the beauty of the American West. With its unique landscapes and abundant wildlife, it is a great trail to escape the city and experience the serenity of nature. You can find more information on the Bureau of Land Management website.
